Frequently Asked Questions
Will screwing into my downspout hinder it’s functionality?
No, the screws included are self-tapping and no pilot hole is needed.
Note that when the downspout was originally mounted on this house, screws secured the downspout (red arrow) onto the house also indicating that screwing into the downspout doesn’t hinder it.
How is the trellis attached to the downspout
The 2 black button fasteners secure the lattice to the cedar blockThe zinc-coated self tapping screw is screwed through the cedar block and into the downspoutStainless steel zip ties prevent the trellis from slipping. The zip ties are woven through the mesh and then wrapped around the downspoutSee also installation diagram below
Is the trellis sturdy?
Yes, the trellis is very sturdy.
To demonstrate the strength of the trellis, we hung 5 sand bags for a total weight of 47 pounds onto a test trellis The trellis was mounted onto a downspout, shown aboveThe 47 pound weight had no effect on the integrity of the downspout
Is there healthy airflow between the trellis and the downspout to protect my plant?
Yes!
The natural cedar mounting brackets provide a 2 inch offset between the downspout and the trellis
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the trellis shipped?
The trellis is shipped as shown in the image above, in retail-ready packaging
The trellis roll is string tied to hold it in placeTake care to hold the trellis lightly so as to avoid accidently slipping the trellis out of the string until you are ready to install it.The zipties are included and are wrapped in with the lattice roll.
Is the trellis available with retail packaging?
Yes, we have custom designed retail-ready packaging.
Must the cedar blocks be used to install the trellis
Yes, the 3 3/4 inch wide cedar block are the brackets used to mount the trellis
The trellis arrives with the first cedar block attached. The remaining 2 blocks are attached during installation.
Does the width of the mesh sometimes vary
The manner in which the black mesh/lattice is manufactured causes the lattice grid to have variable widths. So when we strip the lattice into the approximate 4 inch wide widths, that variability is also seen. The variability does not affect the strength of the lattice, it will still hold up to 50 lbs.
The Trellis Kit Contents are detailed below: This is a black lattice plant support for Downspouts. The Trellis is available as a 1 or 2 pack of lattice panels plus the needed mounting hardware.
The Black Lattice (highlighted in Blue)
The black lattice is approximately 4 inches wide and 9 feet longThe lattice grid (each square) is approximately 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch. The lattice can be shortened if desired with household scissors. The lattice can support up to 45 pounds.
The Cedar Mounting Brackets (highlighted in Blue)
The mounting brackets are natural cedar to ensure long lived use. They are cut-to-size with pre-drilled holes. The mounting brackets are approximately 3 3/4 inches wide
Self-Tapping Screws and Fasteners (highlighted in Blue)
Zinc-coated self-tapping screws are included in the mounting kit.The screws are not made for masonry (brick/cement/stone ) surface. The black fasteners secure the lattice to the mounting bracket. They are removable, see Step 4 of the Installation description below.
Stainless Steel Zip Ties (highlighted in Blue)
Stainless steel zip ties hold the trellis in place.Note: the image shows the zip ties connected. The zip ties are shipped unconnected.Do not connect the zip ties until you have mounted them onto the trellis and downspout
How the Trellis is Mounted Directly onto the Downspout with Self-tapping Screws
Step 1
1. Mount the top wood block (the one with the attached screw) to the gutter just under the seam as shown, making sure the (2) button head fasteners are against the downspout.
Step 2
2.Unroll the mesh, remove the laced -in screw & the (2) button head fasteners from the 2nd wood block (careful, the button head fasteners are meant to be removable and may fall out).
Partially install the long screw into the block, making sure the 2 button head fasteners are against the downspout.
.
Step 3
3. Pull the 2nd block until mesh is straight, then, with a power screwdriver, start the screw on slight angle until screw starts to bite
Step 4
4. Rotate block so the mesh is tight, then completely drive screw in tight.
Trim any excess loose mesh with household scissors (ie if you needed to shorten the trellis)
How the Trellis is Mounted Directly onto the Downspout, continued
Step 5
5. Open small bag of fasteners and mount the remaining “Mid” support Block to the mesh with the (2) button head fasteners, then install screw with a power screwdriver, screwing the screw through the cedar block and into the downspout to secure block to downspout.
Step 6
6. Install one metal cable tie on each wood block. Be sure to lace the cable tie through the mesh on the outer face of the block to secure the cable from sliding off the block. Wrap around the downspout and insert the cable tip into the opposite end collar. Tighten by pulling on the loose end while holding the collar from sliding.
Step 6
Metal Cable Tie installed.
Note the downspout was mounted to the home with a screw that was drilled into the downspout. It’s function was not compromised. The self-tapping screws used to install the trellis also does not compromise the downspout.
The downspout trellis is supporting a climbing clematis
As the clematis plant climbs the lattice trellis, the downspout is camouflaged.
