All too often, kids’ furniture is seen as temporary; items that come and go as a child grows out of them. That’s not the case with the collection designer Jeremiah Brent just launched with Crate & Kids. In fact, the curation is full of pieces we—full-on adults—would love for our own homes. “These pieces are my answer to family heirlooms,” he says.
According to Brent, the items are inspired by parenthood, including manifestations of travel memories and symbols that are meaningful to his family. Look closely at the bedding and you’ll spot mythical creatures that he and his children, Poppy (9) and Oskar (6), talk about during story time. “What was really fun for me is to take the last nine years of being a parent, what I’ve learned, what I needed, what I reached for, and what I couldn’t find,” he says. Ahead, the designer shares seven standout picks from the collection and why each one will last well beyond the teenage years.
Storied Hazelnut Wood and Stone Wide 7-Drawer Kids Dresser by Jeremiah Brent, Crate & Kids
$1,499
The inlaid travertine stone top on this wood dresser isn’t just for looks: It’s a sturdy surface meant to support Crate’s changing table topper (sold separately). “It is something that can really stand the test of time,” Brent says.
Portuguese Summer Framed Wall Art Print by Jeremiah Brent, Crate & Kids
$199
This piece of art was inspired by the designer’s family trips to Portugal, where they bought a house two years ago. “The kids wake up and go outside, and they don’t come back inside,” he says. “I get to watch them view the world through their eyes, and I get to see what they connect to. The art is me trying to articulate that freedom and that expression.”
Embrace Sage Green Velvet Swivel Glider Nursery Chair by Jeremiah Brent, Crate & Kids
$899
Back when Brent’s kids were babies, he struggled to find the perfect glider. “I never could find one that I could rest my head on when I was feeding and that had the perfect arm height for bottle-to-mouth ratio,” he says. So he created the chair he wishes he’d had in their nursery, and it features a supersoft velvet upholstery that only makes bonding time even cozier.
Treasured Chestnut Red Kids Side Table by Jeremiah Brent, Crate & Kids
$299
Somewhere in between an oxblood red and a chocolate brown, this sculptural table will look just as good anchoring stacks of picture books as it will a simple vase and a Kindle as their reading progresses.
Rachel Hazelnut Wood and Upholstered Full Kids Canopy Bed with Storage by Jeremiah Brent (Full), Crate & Kids
$2,199
This piece of furniture is Poppy approved, Brent happily points out. “She was very excited about the bed, and when I told her it had storage, I got a squeal,” he recalls. The detail that made us squeal? It comes in a queen size, too.
Tucker Brown Sherpa Kids Twin Bed by Jeremiah Brent (Full), Crate & Kids
$799
This frame’s fun, sherpa fabric is balanced by its super-angular silhouette, making it more sophisticated than your average twin bed. Brent agrees: “It would also be really beautiful in an adult’s bedroom in a full size.” His son’s response? “He said, ‘That bed is perfect for jumping on.’ I was like, ‘Well, we don’t jump on our beds,’” Brent says, laughing.
Gwen Upholstered Kids Wall Mirror by Jeremiah Brent, Crate & Kids
$399
The hand-embroidered illustrations on this mirror’s upholstered frame—a Joshua tree, a watchful eye, and more—are important symbols in Brent’s life, and the piece’s unique shape stems from his love of French mid-century design. “It felt playful and young but still sophisticated,” he says.
