Anyone who has paid rent to a landlord knows there are a few enemies you’ll meet when settling into a home you don’t own. Among them: boob lights. Hiring an electrician to hardwire new lighting is a tough call when you’ll ultimately have to take them down again as moving day approaches—or consider them a loss to you and a gift for the new tenants. Plus, bringing on a professional to tackle the job is expensive, and you still have to pay for the fixture. But it’s 2024 and there are some non-invasive options for hiding unsightly ceiling lights. Remember the Tulip shades? We just found another really nice option in Urban Outfitters’ home section.
For well under $100, you can swap out that weird dome for a chic, striped drum. The Odette Flush Mount Conversion Kit comes with the shade and all of the hardware you need to attach it securely. But you won’t be drilling any holes or working with any wires. The shade is designed to sit over your existing bulbs, you just have to remove the original light cover. It’s available in three colorways: blue and green, yellow and cream, or pink and white. Here’s a thought: Get one of each combination and use them as a way to create some subtle continuity throughout your home.

Overall, reviewers applaud the design and easy installation but it’s worth noting that one did mention that the acrylic drum cover came cracked. (That’s where the easy return process comes in handy.) The moral of the story: You could get creative like the woman who DIY’ed a shade with macrame cord and wooden beads and the TikToker who turned a basket into a fixture, or you could save some time and maybe even some money with this pick.
