Alexandra Gater is no stranger to peel-and-stick backsplash tile. The seasoned renovator, who specializes in making over tiny rental apartments in the Toronto area (and then sharing said transformations on her YouTube channel), has used them countless times, including in her own kitchen. But not all walls are made to handle temporary, adhesive tile. “Some people don’t have a backsplash and peel-and-stick tiles will not work on drywall,” Gater shared in one of her recent videos documenting a 70 square foot kitchen update. For this space, the pro DIYer instead turned to a renter-friendly product she’d never used before: Click’n Tile.
Created by Click Deco, these tiles lock onto a panel almost as if they were LEGOs. The product was the ideal alternative for Gater because the backing is less abrasive (it’s essentially extra-strong double-sided tape). “The cool thing about this product is that you can also adhere it with construction adhesive for a more permanent solution,” Gater tells Domino.
Once the mounting plates were up, it was time to get tiling. While most of the rectangular pieces could be installed in a snap (literally), Gater and her team got bogged down by all of the cuts they had to make. Using a table saw, they had to trim some of the pieces along the bottom edge and around the wall cabinets and outlets. It took them around six hours to finish the job. “We are definitely hoping to use this product in the future when we just have a blank, unobstructed wall,” she recapped in her tutorial video.
While the tile is fairly affordable ($36 for a box of 24—and you can take them with you when you move!), Gater guesses the total product cost was close to $1,500 because they decided to do the entire kitchen wall. “If I was to do it again, I’d probably only tile halfway up the wall which would save labor and money,” she says.
The other beauty of Click Deco’s system? If you ever tire of the pattern or colors you chose, you can always swap them out later for a fresh look.
