Inside Fashion Entrepreneur Petra Tungården’s Stockholm Apartment

Magazine editor-turned-fashion entrepreneur Petra Tungården can find inspiration in almost anything, even her son’s picture books. “A lot of them have such beautiful colors, and they combine them so well,” she says. While flipping through the pages of Little Ghost Laban or any of the Alfons Åberg books, she’ll quickly pull out her phone to snap a photo. The idea might eventually find its way into her clothing brand, Adoore, which focuses on figure-hugging silhouettes, or, more likely, it’ll influence something in her family’s Stockholm apartment, which is teeming with rich hues and eye-catching materials. “I think the way I dress is reflected in my interior style,” explains Tungården. “My closet is full of party pieces. I buy more eccentric stuff most people don’t wear everyday.” It’s safe to say, she’s not the kind of girl who has a closet full of basic white-Ts, and her home is the decorating equivalent of that.

Tungården and her husband’s house search was fueled by something many Scandinavians crave: natural light. “Before we were living in a beautiful apartment with hand-painted ceilings but it was on the bottom floor and quite dark,” she says. Plus, they had plans to grow their family at the time, so finding a place with more space was a bonus, too. When they stumbled across the perfect place and the showing happened to be filled with tons of other interested buyers, Tungården went into business mode. “I put in a bid after being there for five seconds. I was like, I have to scare everyone off,” she shares.

The tactic ultimately worked, but then they moved onto the hard stuff—renovating. The woman they had bought it from had been living there for four decades. “It was almost like a museum,” recalls Tungården. Fast forward three-and-a-half years, she’s ready to give us the low-down on everything they’ve updated (so far).

The biggest thing we did was move the kitchen out to the light. I wanted everything to blend in and be like furniture. | Kitchen design by Kitchens by Paul; Stools, Frama; Chandelier, Studio Laurin; Sconces, Arne Jacobsen via Sols; Faucet, Dornbracht; Cooktop, Miele; Tray, Studio Vraco.
arched refrigerator doors
I was also so into round forms and arches. I made the refrigerator and freezer door rounded and added a film on the doors that looks like a textile.
wood kitchen cabinets
I’m a very colorful person, and the kitchen was very beige to me, so I wanted the stone to be the leading part. I fell in love with Calacatta Viola because it has so much expression. It almost looks like a painting.
marble arch in kitchen
Again, I was just so into arches, and I think, because it’s such an old apartment, I didn’t want it to feel too harsh. I didn’t want sharp lines.
marble bathroom sink
From the beginning, we wanted a huge bathroom, but there were pipes in all the walls. And since it took so long for us to get the new kitchen approved, we couldn’t move anything else. It wasn’t allowed [by the building]. So, we made the shower a separate room. | Mirror design by Caroline Sandtröm; Faucet, Dornbracht.
marble shower
Now when I look back, it was such a good decision. Someone can take a shower while someone else is in the bathroom and it’s never like, “I can’t do my makeup because it’s so hot in here.” It’s also so nice because the shower got so much bigger. It’s like a small spa. | Shower Marble, Vikens Hantverkeri; Fixtures, Dornbracht.
murano glass chandelier in living room
A friend of mine has a shop that sells Murano lamps, so she found this chandelier and was like, “You need to have this. It will look perfect in your apartment.” I love that even though [this light] is very big, it’s very soft in its shape. | Vintage Chairs, Sols; Coffee Table,@tomtebogatan; Dining table design by Caroline Sandström and made by Vikens Hantverkeri; Vintage Dining Chairs, Olavi Hanninen; Curtains, Gotain; Vase (on table), Malene Knudsen.

“When you have beige or white walls, colorful pieces can look quite harsh against it. I wanted everything to feel very smooth.”

blue french doors leading into living room
Since I started using colors on the walls, all the furniture, all the paintings, everything looked so much better, because when you have beige or white walls, colorful pieces can look quite harsh against it. I wanted everything to feel very smooth. | Wall Color, Vintage Surf by Detale CPH; Door Color, S1015-B via Flugger.
blue-green apartment living room
My biggest passion in life is finding lamps secondhand, and I’m obsessed with wall lighting especially (I think we have 18 wall lamps). I have a cork lamp that sits very low [in my living room]. My kids touch it all the time so I’ve been gluing pieces back on it, but I don’t want to move it. It makes the room! The floor lamp in the corner is one I bought with my friend at a market in Mallorca. I will get buried with it. It’s the best piece I’ve ever found. | Sofa, B&B Italia via Nordiska Galleriet; Rug, Nordic Knots; Mirror, Vikens Hantverkeri; Chandelier, Studio Laurin; Art, Mattias Storm; Sconce, Pierre Chareau via Galerie Mcde.

hallway with red shoe bench
We just finished the hallway this fall. I found this big textile at auction that is of a Van Gogh painting but on a textile. It took five months to get it to Sweden. I think the colors fit perfectly. Then, we wanted to build a small bench where you can sit and take your shoes off. | Mirror, Gubi; Pendants, Lee Broom; Vintage Stool, Sjöström Antik; Customized IKEA Closets with Miathéo fronts.
brown bedding
I’m not an organized person. It’s mostly chaos everywhere. So, we decided to make the insides of our closets in the bedroom a light colored wood so I can really see the clothes. | Chair, Casina; Closet Design, WLS; Pendant, Michael Anastassiades via Nordiska Galleriet.
floor lamp next to bed
The headboard is the same one from our old apartment, but I found new fabric for the base (before, it was just beige). I also got this small sewing table at the market in Mallorca. We go every Sunday morning when we’re there.| Rug, Nordic Knots; Lamp, Gubi; Sconce, Studio Laurin; Art, Jesper Waldersten; Bedding, Nevotex; Bed Frame Upholstery Fabrication, Carina Olsén Design, Bed Fabric, Romo.

kids desk with ruffled top
[My son’s] desk was found by my friend and stylist Caroline Sandström at an auction. Before, it had an old nasty textile on it, so I went to Svenskt Tenn and made a new one. It doesn’t feel like such a serious desk. | Vintage Mirror, Palermo Atelier; Bubble Letters, Paula Atelier; Vintage Chair, Charlotte Perriand via Galerie North; Carpet, Rug Project.
bathroom shelves
I think textiles are such a great way to update something. This fabric is vintage everywhere: I used it in my bathroom, at my mother’s country house, and pillows at our office. One pattern can give new life to so many pieces. | Vintage Mirror, Palermo Atelier; Bowl, Project 213A.
