Jeremiah Brent is filling his downtime between filming Queer Eye seasons with exciting home projects. Chief among them is preparing his space for unwelcome bugs: The designer, along with New Girl actor Max Greenfield, stars in a fresh campaign for pest control brand STEM to promote its design-friendly light and fan traps. “I’m always looking for different ways that I can improve the home experience, not only for my clients, but also for myself, and nothing drives me crazier than bugs,” says Brent.
Come April, he leaves the typical cleaning tasks to his triple Virgo husband Nate Berkus and instead focuses on getting out in the garden, making tech-focused updates, and streamlining his outdoor furniture (his stance on matching sets may surprise you). Here’s what the designer had to share when we recently sat down with him to discuss all things spring.
The DIY I’ve Been Tackling
Six months ago, we had this idea to plant a lavender field [at our Portugal house]. Nate, myself, and the kids planted rows and rows of lavender. We took off our gloves, got dirt under our fingernails, and laughed. We went back a few weeks ago, and it’s massive. I never thought that I would get so much from gardening and restoring this land; it’s my favorite thing. I’ve got lavender oil already in the making.
My Secret to a Stylish Outdoor Set-Up
I’m definitely more of a purist when it comes to decorating an exterior. I like one collection, usually very universal. I like performance fabric. If you can infuse a water element or add candles for ambience, it’s an opportunity to take what’s going on inside your home and extend it out there.
What My Version of Spring Cleaning Looks Like
I think we forget that our house is this living organism alongside us, and as we change and adjust and adapt and grow, we have to do the same for our house. So, we’ll move the art around, we’ll move furniture around, we’ll play around. It’s our happy place to spend two days over-caffeinated with the kids telling us things don’t look good, and finding a way to live differently; to spring into a new direction for the rest of the year.
How I Feel About Brown and Burgundy Trending
Art Deco has been such a pillar of my design process since I started my career (Jean-Michel Frank has been super influential on me creatively). I think what we’re experiencing 1744664759 is this Art Deco moment and this palette is very derivative of that. Color is one of the best ways to bring in that drama. I think we’re going to see a lot more of it.
