Growing English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) in a field can be a delightful endeavor, as these charming flowers can create a beautiful natural carpet of blue in the right conditions. Here’s a guide to help you grow English bluebells in a field: Choose the Right Location: English bluebells thrive in partially shaded areas with moist, well-drained soil. Look for a location in your field that receives dappled sunlight or partial shade, such as under deciduous trees. Prepare the Soil: Before planting, it’s essential to prepare the soil. English bluebells prefer fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Remove any weeds or debris from the area and incorporate compost to improve soil structure and fertility. Planting Bulbs: English bluebells are typically grown from bulbs, which should be planted in the autumn for spring blooms. Dig small holes or trenches about 3-4 inches deep and space the bulbs about 4-6 inches apart. Place the bulbs in the holes with the pointed end facing upwards and cover them with soil. Watering: After planting, water the bulbs thoroughly to settle the soil and encourage root growth. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells or in the absence of rainfall. Mulching: Applying a layer of mulch, such as shredded bark or leaf mold, can help conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Mulch can also mimic the natural woodland environment that English bluebells prefer. Maintenance: English bluebells are relatively low-maintenance once established. However, you may need to water during prolonged dry periods and remove any weeds that compete with the bluebells for nutrients and moisture. Naturalizing: English bluebells have a tendency to naturalize and spread over time, forming large colonies in suitable conditions. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after blooming to replenish the bulbs for the following year. Avoid cutting or mowing the foliage until it has completely withered.
Famed English Bluebells have created shimmering azure woodlands throughout the British Isles since as early as 1580. This slightly fragrant, prized naturalizer has strappy foliage and pendant, bell-shaped, deep violet-blue flowers on just one side of its stem, causing each flowering raceme to arch gracefully.
Hyacinthoides non-scripta prefers a bit of light. Bulb offsets (baby bulbs on the sides of the mother bulb you’ve planted) and self-sowing seed make it a good naturalizer.
They are adapted from horticultural zones 5 through 7 (or 8 with protection). You’ll need about nine bulbs per square foot.
Plant 4″ Deep and 4″ Apart. Height: 18″ in full to partial shade. May blooming.
