A small perennial herb that belongs to the Apiaceae family. It is native to certain regions of Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia. This plant has been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for its health benefits.
Appearance: Gotu kola is a low-growing plant that typically reaches a height of 20-30 centimeters (8-12 inches). It features slender, green, fan-shaped leaves with a smooth texture and distinct palmate venation.
Growth Habit: This herb spreads through stolons, which are horizontal stems that root at nodes, helping it propagate and form dense colonies in the wild.

Habitat: It thrives in damp, marshy areas, along the edges of ponds, and in shallow water. It is often found growing in tropical and subtropical regions with warm and humid climates.

Here are the ideal growing conditions for gotu kola:
Climate: Gotu kola thrives in warm and humid climates. It prefers temperatures between 68°F to 95°F (20°C to 35°C) and has a humidity level between 40% and 60%. It can tolerate a range of temperatures, but it is sensitive to frost and should be protected from freezing conditions. If your home gets too cold during the winter months, place Gotu kola near an indoor heating source (fireplace) to help maintain this temperature without interrupting its active growth period.Sunlight: While gotu kola prefers partial shade, it can tolerate full sun if the soil remains consistently moist. In hotter regions, providing some shade during the hottest parts of the day can prevent the plant from wilting.Soil: The plant prefers well-draining, fertile, and moist soil. It does best in slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Amending the soil with organic matter can help retain moisture and improve the overall soil quality.Watering: Gotu kola requires regular and consistent watering to keep the soil moist. Avoid waterlogging, as excessive water can lead to root rot. During periods of intense heat or drought, ensure the plant receives sufficient water.Planting: You can grow gotu kola from seeds or cuttings. Plant seeds in a seedling tray or directly in the ground, barely covering them with soil. Transplant seedlings when they are large enough to handle. If using cuttings, plant them in a pot or directly in the ground.Spacing: Space gotu kola plants about 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) apart to give them enough room to spread and grow.Fertilizer: Gotu kola doesn’t require heavy fertilization, but applying a balanced, organic fertilizer during the growing season can promote healthy growth. Be cautious not to over-fertilize, as excessive nutrients may lead to leggy growth and reduced medicinal potency.Harvesting: You can start harvesting gotu kola leaves once the plant is well established. Take care not to harvest too many leaves from a single plant at once to ensure its continued growth.
