The Outdoor Upgrades People Aren’t Tackling, But Should Be

During the summer, it’s not unusual to see a lot more of your neighbors. Odds are, you can catch them out in their yards knocking out their to-do lists, perhaps pruning the shrubs, planting a new tree, power washing the patio, or replacing their fence. Because these are some of the most popular outdoor projects in 2024, according to a new survey conducted by Houzz that polled 1,106 homeowners.

We weren’t shocked to find landscaping-related tasks at the top, but we were a little surprised to see play areas, retaining walls, house numbers, and driveways getting the cold shoulder, as we know improving any one of these can help elevate your exterior. Ahead, we make a case for tackling these four tasks ASAP.

Prioritize Playtime

Maintaining and upgrading an outdoor space can often feel like a chore, but your family will be thankful for having some extra square footage dedicated to fun. Take a cue from designer Eric Trine’s DIY jungle gym, which he built primarily out of 4-by-4s and 2-by-6s for $1,000. For the adult crew, get inspired by this San Clemente home’s bocce ball court.

Upgrade Your House Number

Ok, this is a quick one to fix. Not to mention, it will make it easier for friends to find your place. There are so many options out there—tiles, slender metal numerals, durable stoneware—choosing the right vibe for your home will be the toughest part of the job.

Make the Most of Your Driveway

It’s surprising how much space a driveway can take up. If you’ve got room to spare after you factor in a car or two, consider giving it an extra function. This Echo Park home turned a liminal stretch of gravel into a dining space. Work with a professional contractor if you’re looking to dig up concrete to make room for some gravel or pavers because some important things (plumbing lines!) are hiding under that driveway.

Jazz Up Retaining Walls

Retaining walls aren’t the sexiest part of your backyard, there’s no getting around that. But spending time to upgrade this structural element can completely transform your situation. For his own design firm’s HQ, Bobby Berk took a brick retaining wall and gave it a glow-up with brushed concrete that matches the material and pattern underfoot. Search for ways to add consistency between the large, functional elements of your outdoor haven.
