How to starch linen napkins?

No matter how good your linen tablecloths or napkins are, they will not look festive or tidy if they are not appropriately washed, ironed and starched. Linen fabric tends to get wrinkled and creased, so it needs to get starched to get the desired look. This blog post will reveal how to starch linen napkins properly.

Why starch linen napkins?

Starching is used to make your linen look better and enhance the features of the fabric. After starching, the material acquires new properties as follows:

  • the structure of the material becomes denser;
  • the product retains its shape better and longer;
  • the fabric wrinkles less;
  • Dirt and dust do not penetrate the depth of the fibres but remain on the fabric’s surface, so clothes are easier to wash.

What is the process of starching?

Usually, people use potato starch for linen napkins or tablecloths. You can find other types of starch on the market, for example, rice, corn or wheat, but the powder made from potatoes is better for linen starching than others.

You can starch wet, slightly damp and even completely dry napkins as long as it is completely saturated with the starch. Depending on how dense and tough the material needs to be, we should choose the starching method.

We recommend putting 20 – 25 grams of starch into cold water for linen napkins. Then pour some hot water into the prepared solution and mix until smooth. Later, add some water following a ratio of 3:1.

When the solution is prepared, soak the item making sure that it is completely immersed and leave it for 5 minutes. Then, wring out the product and hang it to dry. We do not suggest drying on heating devices and balconies, as it will be difficult to iron them later.
